Kinect FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

There are a lot of questions circulating the internet regarding Microsoft’s new accessory for the Xbox 360, Kinect. I hope to be able to answer some of them here in my Kinect FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).

Q: When is Kinect going to be released?
A: Kinect is set to be released on November 4, 2010.

Q: Is Kinect the successor to the Xbox 360?
A: No. Microsoft has continually claimed that they think the Xbox 360 has a 10-year cycle (it came out in 2005) but since previous consoles had a lot shorter life span, this has caused some confusion. Kinect is simply an accessory that will work with every single Xbox 360 that has been sold so far.

Q: Will Kinect work with existing games?
A: This is another area that has sparked a lot of confusion, mostly due to the fact that a Kinect Burnout Paradise video has been released, and so people began assuming that since Burnout Paradise was a previously released game, that other previously released games will be available for Kinect use. That is not the case, as Kudo Tsunoda, the Creative Director for Kinect has said, that existing games require a large rewrite of their code, which will not make it practical for them to release update packs to work with Kinect. But, definitely expect some sequels to games, as well as annual sports games to come out utilizing Kinect controls.

Q: Will Kinect replace the controller?
A: No, Kinect will not be replacing the controller. Some games will definitely be built to control the entire game without a controller, games that are specifically designed to be directly Kinect games, but not every 360 game will be like that. I definitely see game developers, in addition to making Kinect-only games, making games that both utilize Kinect for only some parts, and some games that just won’t use Kinect at all!

I hope these questions and answers have definitely been helpful. If you want to find out when an official Kinect launch price and pre order information, then subscribe to our newsletter below.
